52:1$ Exchange Rate by the end of this year?

Independent brokerage and investment group, CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets said that the peso would likely reach 52 pesos to 1 usd by year-end.

Slowing remittances from OFWs abroad as well as softening interest rates will bear down the peso despite the Philippines’ current account surplus.

Data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) showed that the peso has shed 2.85 percent to 48.419 per $1 as of end March from 47.076 as of end January.

Philipinnes is in dire need of Priests!

The only Catholic country in Asia, the Philippines is in shortage of Priests. Data shows that since 2004 there is a serious shortage of priests in the Philippines, and at least 25,000 are needed to serve some 68 million Filipino Catholics.

The ideal ratio should be one priest per 2,000 parishioners.

But in Manila, the ratio is 1 priest to 20,000 parishioners.

Those who are interested to become a priest could visit parishes or seminaries and ask the vocation promoters about the process.

Aussie reenacts crucifixion in Bulacan!

April 12, 2009

It is already a tradition in some parts of the Philippines to reenact the crucifixion of Christ, it has been reported that the first foreigner to have done this was last Friday. An Australian national identified himself as John Michael, 36, a part-time student in a university in Melbourne who is working as an accountant participated in the reenactment of the crucifixion along with the local penitents.

He is the first foreign-born Roman Catholic devotee to join the annual crucifixion rites held here for the last 40 years.

The Australian grimaced when four-inch nails pierced through his hands and feet.

He closed his eyes and opened his mouth wide as if shouting in pain, but no sound came out.

Michael was nailed to the cross erected in front of a concrete stage in a basketball court beside a chapel. His ordeal took less than 30 seconds.

He admitted that his crucifixion was partly for the healing of his 59-year-old mother stricken with liver cancer.

He said the primary message of his experience is that “Christ is true.”

Unli Globe to any Landline!

April 6, 2009

Globe Telecom has launched a new cellphone-and-landline-in-one service called the Plan Duo Subscription. This service allows Globe subscribers to carry two numbers in a single SIM card — 1 mobile and 1 landline.

Here's how it works:

Globe Plan Duo subscribers are given a Duo Landline number. The mobile phone and SIM will have two (2) numbers: your current mobile number (i.e. 0917-XXX-XXXX) and your Duo Landline number (i.e. 02-XXX-XXXX).
  • With the Duo Plan, you get the following service at free of charge: Duo to any Landline calls, any Landline to Duo calls, and Duo to Duo calls. Calls made to other mobile numbers are charged regular mobile rates.
  • There’s no need for a special dialing number — just key in the Area Code + Landline Number and your ringing. Same with calling another subscriber on a Duo line.
  • Service is initially available in NCR and Cebu. All other calls outside the area code (02 for NCR or 32 for Cebu) will be charged regular mobile NDD rates.

  • Subscription to DUO Service is Php399 per month on top of your regular Globe Plan. Single SIM, two numbers? Time to ditch the landline.

How to get Globe Duo Plan:

    1. Promo is open to all Globe Postpaid subscribers from April 5 to July 3, 2009 (not available for prepaid or corporate accounts).

    2. Subscriber can avail of the service through the Business Centers or Register via SMS (with required SMS acceptance of Terms and Conditions). Simply text DUO to 8888.

    3. There will be an initial 90-day holding period for new activations, subject to pre-termination fee of Php1,200. After the holding period, subscription is auto-renewed on a monthly basis unless otherwise requested by the subscriber.

    4. You can only avail of one (1) active DUO landline number for every active Globe line, at any one time.

    Today is World Autism Day!

    April 2, 2009

The United Nations General Assembly supported a campaign to promote early diagnosis and intervention on autism and set April 2 of each year as World Autism Awareness Day.

Autism or Autistic Syndrome Disorder is a development disorder that affects the way a person communicates with and relates to people around him. It is usually first noticed when a child reaches the age of three and is basically identified by three areas of difficulty for the autistic person: Social relationships and communications, imagination and planning, and repetitive behaviors.

Some people with autism may never learn to talk. They engage in repetitive movements. They have a reduced sensitivity to pain but are abnormally sensitive to sound, touch, and other sensory stimulation. Some speak in a sing-song voice on topics, with little regard for the interests of the person to whom they are speaking. The autistic person may appear aloof and indifferent to those around him. He may be sociable with one person but may not be able to function in a group.

The cause of autism is not known and last throughout a person’s lifetime. Recent studies, however, strongly suggest that some have a genetic predisposition to autism. Researchers are looking for clues about genes that contribute to this increased susceptibility. Evidence also suggests that some emotional disorders such as manic depression occur more frequently than average in the families of people with autism. There is no cure but treatment can help. Treatments can include behavior and communication therapies and medicines to control symptoms. There are many strategies for helping an autistic child or person but the best ones are based on understanding the individual.

World Autism Awareness Day expresses deep concern for the prevalence and high rate of autism in children, the consequent developmental challenges it brings, and highlights autism as a growing global health crisis. The day also celebrates the unique skills and talents of people with autism. By bringing together all autism organizations worldwide on this day, we can give a voice to the millions of individuals who are undiagnosed, misunderstood, and looking for help.

Let us join together in our efforts to empower and respond to the needs of the autistic, and inspire compassion, inclusion, and hope vital to their cause.
