Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition for Interior Design is now on!
May 13, 2009
The 2009 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition for Interior Design is now open. The Metrobank Foundation is calling all registered interior designers, 25 to 45 years old, to be a part of this competition, with the theme Eco-Interior Design Towards a Sustainable Future, by applying any of the five R’s of design – Restore, Respect, Reduce, Reuse and Recover.
The competition has two phases, the conceptual design plan and the design execution stages, in which only two design plans will be executed, and it is from there that the grand prize and the special prize winners will be determined. Project site is at the Federaland-owned The Capital Towers along E. Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City.
Prizes at stake are P200, 000 and P150, 000 for the Grand Prize and the Special Prize winners, respectively.
The Foundation, Inc. has adapted the theme “Your Environment Shapes You” for the competition in painting, sculpture, architecture and interior design. In last year’s MADE Competition in Interior Design, the winners typified sustainability in their designs for condominium living. Grand Prize winner April Rose A. Frigillana combined modernism and nature in her design entitled “Nature’s Links”, capitalizing on lightness, freshness and delight, which are popularly known through the Tagalog term maaliwalas.
The eco-friendly design by this UP Diliman alumna is imminent in re-used, recycled and adapted furniture, balusters and Capiz windows. She also made use of an old Singer sewing machine as a support for a desk divider between the dining and living rooms. To save electricity through having proper and sufficient ventilation, Frigillana ensured that the furniture used is not excessive. She also maximized the use of natural light, making sure that it reaches even the entry way; moreover, she used energy-efficient lighting and low-consumption household appliances.
MADE is an annual competition which aims to recognize budding artists in the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture and interior design, as well as to launch and enhance their careers. Originally known as the Metrobank Annual Painting Competition which started in 1984 and was also renamed as Young Painters Annual in 1996, MADE lists the names of now established up-and-coming masters such as Bobby Feleo, Elmer Borlongan, Mark Justiniani, Duddley Diaz, Dan Raralio, Noëll El Farrol, Alfred Esquillo, and Gabby Barredo in its roster of winners.
“The MADE Competition is a celebration of Filipino artists’ ingenuity and at the same time, it is also a vehicle for young artists, architects and interior designers to showcase their masterpieces,” Metrobank Foundation, Inc. president Aniceto Sobrepeña said. “It is Metrobank Foundation’s way of promoting and supporting Filipino art and culture. But more than that, it is our way of advocating environmental protection and awareness through sustainable design.”
The design plans for a 45 square-meter condominium unit will be accepted until May 26 at the Metrobank Foundation, 15/F, Metrobank Plaza, Sen. Gil Puyat Ave., Makati City, and at the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers Secretariat Office, 8/F, Filomena Building, 104 Amorsolo St., Legaspi Village, Makati City.
