The Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles have defeated the De La Salle Green Archers 62-51 to win the UAAP 71 men’s basketball championship Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Chris Tiu, led the Eagles with 16 points to capture Ateneo’s fourth UAAP championship and second in the decade after winning in 2002. For DLSU, Casio finished with 21 points, 18 of which came from the three-point line while Rico Maierhoffer was thrown out of the game in the third quarter after he incurred a second technical foul. 20-year-old Rabeh Al-Hussaini of the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles won this year’s Most Valuable Player award during the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP Season 71) men’s basketball awards at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-foot-6 Al-Hussaini, whose first name, Rabeh, means winner in Arabic ended the reign of 2007 winner and University of Santo Tomas (UST Growling Tigers) star Jervy Cruz. “I’ve been working really hard in practice,” said Al-Hussaini. “The award is just a bonus. I want the [championship] ring for everyone in the team.” he added.
